New Art Journal Page & Handmade Book

Took me a couple days to get back to that post I was going to “do tomorrow” lol. Don’t forget to look at my previous post for a link to a blog hop going on where you have a chance to win some great stencils.

Ok on to my stuff, I finished working on the blue page with hearts I showed before. Here it is:

IMG_4415

If you compare it to my previous picture you can see where I added to it. Make sure to click on the picture to make it full sized so you can see the awesome dimension and texture on the page. I added more color around each heart, stamped some background script all over the page, and on the photo. Then I stamped, painted, cut out and attached the word Enjoy. Stamped “what life has to offer” along the spiral and then I called it done.

Next page I have finished is this one:

IMG_4416

I started with using a stencil for the shape of the flowers. I painted each flower and stem. The butterfly are re-purposed from an old card. I didn’t like how the looked so I covered them with black or white Gesso and then used rub on transfers to make them look like fun butterfly. I added wire to them for the antennae and stuck them to the page using pop dot squares. The “grass” at the bottom was done using tissue paper, same with the taller plant object near the spine. Along the top I took old sheet music and tore it up, distressed the edges and glued it on. The saying on this one is “Bloom where you are planted” Which is fitting for a Mil Spouse who has to move around and find a new way of feeling at home, etc.

This next project was started before I moved. I had bought a sketch pad tore the pages out and folded them neatly in half. Then they sat for a few months. I dug out the tutorial video I had saved on Pinterest showing how to do Coptic binding and got to work. I used black chipboard for the cover. Now I have another art journal book that does not have a spiral in the middle of the spread lol.

Here is a close-up of the extra blue thread detail I added along the spine

A Blog Hop

I have some stuff of my own to post and I will do that soon, perhaps tomorrow. However one of the ladies I enjoy watching mixed media art she creates, has a stencil set that just came out. Her first ever. Because of this, several of the people she knows who do mixed media art are doing a blog hop using her stencils in their work. Some pretty creative things happening out there. Here is the link to her blog where you can read her post and also find the links to each of the blogs participating. In addition, you can leave comments on each of the blogs and be eligible to win one of the stencil sets for yourself. FUN!

Halloween Mini Album and Art Journal

In my last post I mentioned I was working on a mini album for Halloween. It is not done yet but it’s mostly there and far enough along that I can show some pictures. All of the Halloween deco in the book were purchased on sale/clearance.

For the cover I added this cute piece which is actually one of those cheap balsa wood ornaments they sell at the craft stores and you paint them yourself. I loved the little ornament (have a witch one too) but really had no idea what to use them for at first but for 49 cents I couldn’t pass up getting a couple lol. I also added a fastener to keep the book closed and a little bat and some fabric flowers.

IMG_4380

This skeleton actually had no bendy legs so he would not fit on the inside cover. I solved that problem by cutting it just above the knee cap bone and re-attached the bottom half of the leg into a more suitable arrangement. He has his cup of poison (probably what killed him) and a picture on the wall. The owl on the next page was actually part of the paper I cut to fit. On the edge of the right page (and all the rest) you can see a piece of black paper hanging out. This part is not completed yet but they will be able to be pulled out and up to four pictures added to each of them. (or tickets, candy wrappers, whatever memorabilia)

IMG_4381

On this page I have used some of those triangle banner pieces I made (mentioned in last post as well). I added the word “boo” using some rub-on stickers. The right side page I added what is called a “belly band” and a little embellishment at the bottom to keep the tag from falling out.

IMG_4382

Here you see one of the spider webs I cut out mentioned in a previous post. I only attached it along the corner edge so I could tuck something in. There is another one added on a different page that I did not take a picture of. On the right side is a spider that was on the paper I cut out. I added some black glitter stickles to his legs and some silver liquid pearls to the web line he is hanging from.

IMG_4383

This picture shows a little half page I created that has a tag stuck into it. On the reverse of the flap I added one of the candelabra cut outs I made. This little pocket flap has a section hiding behind it where additional pockets are attached to the next page. The stripy bit you can see is the washi tape I added to some tags that are stuffed into the two small pockets.

IMG_4384

This shows the “split page” pockets I made, they have a tag in each. The books on the left is another rub-on and the right side page webbing I added some more liquid pearls accent.

IMG_4385

This picture shows the last page and back cover where I added a bunch of little pockets for tucking things into. I used a circle punch to create the cutouts.

IMG_4386

I really enjoyed making this and it was not overly complicated so I will be making more of them in other themes.

Next on my list is the Art Journal. I have been watching lots of different youtube videos of ladies who are very talented Art journalists. The things they can paint and draw are amazing to me. I have been putting off doing more in the altered book I showed here: https://bluecrafty.wordpress.com/2013/05/12/paper-and-haul/ simply because I wasn’t really thrilled about what I had done so far and I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go with it. What I have done now is start a completely different book that is much bigger and can allow for a larger assortment of products used. This helped with my “creative block”. I have only done three pages so far and each one may or may not be complete, time will tell as I look back at them and decide if I want to add more. Before I go on to the pictures I just want to say how relaxing it is just to slap whatever I feel like onto the page without worrying about measurements or if a technique is done a certain way, or what it is supposed to mean etc. This is for me to do what I want in a way that makes me happy and allows me to get creative without the restriction of a 4 x 6 space. The only thing I had to buy was modeling paste, the rest is all items I already had, so this is a great way to start using up some of my craft stuff.

This is the first page, I used mod podge to attach three different colors of blue tissue paper to the page. Once that was dry I added the tree branch with birdcage using a stencil and some stamp ink. Two of the little birds are laser cut wood which I have colored and glued to the page. There is a moon rub on and I added the year I started doing this particular book using chipboard I colored. In the corner is a piece of paper with washi tape holding it on that I included a date and notes about the page.

IMG_4390

This page started as a sketch of the large flower and then I added yellow puffy fabric paint on top of. The fabric paint is pretty old lol and useless for any kind of outfit art but I didn’t want to just throw it out and this was a great reason why. When I rub my hand across the paper I can feel that outline and it’s pretty cool. The pink, yellow, blue, and green are all acrylic paints. The flowers and stems at the bottom are a mix of rub on and card-stock stickers. I’m not done with this page, the flowers need some leaves but I haven’t decided how I want to put them on there. Also I want to do more with the sunflower petals.

IMG_4388

On the next picture I first slapped down some blue paint and then added the swirling dots. I also added some spiral swirls which I later didn’t like so I covered them with modeling paste using a brick wall stencil. The texture on those is great! The hearts are cut from old dictionary book paper I got from an order on Ebay; and then I colored the edges and added some glossy accent to it. After that I decided they needed some mod podge. They are glued to the page with some ripped mulberry paper behind them. I went fishing with my husband (not to actually fish) and took a few pictures in black and white to use in some projects; attached is one of the pictures using photo corners from my stash. I have some words stamped out I will be adding as I finish the page. I’m having fun with this art journaling book.

IMG_4389

Lastly here are some more shapes I have cut from that sticky paper I have been hoarding. Now in a more useful shape 🙂

Thanks for reading, please post any questions you have and I hope you are having a great week in your own crafting and art 🙂

New Ideas for Old Supply Stash.

Many years ago I bought a kit of scrap-booking supplies off HSN or QVC (been so long I cannot remember for sure). The kit came with four different sized adhesive backed papers, sticker tabs, borders, metal ringed tags, card-stock tags, and some other “sticker” type items. It was a great set of paper and embellishments for a great price. I have used several of the tags and stickers but the paper has sat there waiting. Last week I discovered a purpose for the 2 x 12 strips of that paper. Here is a picture of those strips:

IMG_4320
As you can see, some of the pattern ones aren’t exactly “to die for”.

I have been seeing a lot of pennant banner type things coming out. Like this one:

banner card

I figured why buy those little banner stickers (because they do sell them) when I can make my own. So I cut up a strip of the wood grain and the cork board papers and here is what I got:

IMG_4321

Well they turned out pretty nice so while I was at it I might as well cut up every 2 x 12 strip into them so I have a ready assortment of colors for any project possibility. AND even better, they already have a sticky backing so I don’t have to hunt down glue or tape etc. I even kept the tiny leftover pieces from each end in case they could be handy for something lol. They actually will fit together to make another banner triangle and can be two colors.

IMG_4342

So there you have it, a way to re-purpose stash to a more useful embellishment option. I think from some of the larger pieces of paper I’ll make some different shaped ones.

I’ve been working on a Halloween mini album this week too. I’m really enjoying it and will show it when I am done. If you want to see how to make an album base (blank book you can add any topic you want to it) like the one I am using then head on over to Youtube and watch this video by Kathy Orta for the binding system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajwfa5u4ALQ (she has tons of wonderful project ideas, love her videos) And for the pages I got my information from Cassie Keith http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X8X89V_bnA Her second video to that one also shows Kathy Orta’s binding system and also how to complete the cover in the same fashion as Kathy. She goes pretty quick in the video but you can figure it all out. I am definitely going to be making more of the base books to turn in to assorted topics, already have a sewing/crafting one in mind and my daughter has insisted I make her one too lol.

Happy Scrapping!

Shopping Trip and UFP’s…

Ok so first you are probably wondering what the heck an UFP is. Well it is what I am calling my UN-Finished Projects. We’ll get to that in a little bit.

First up is shopping trip, just because it was so fun finding these little treasures today, especially after it being an aggravating morning. Retail therapy is always nice and especially so when it is crafting goodies. I had received an ad in email earlier in the week telling me that Tuesday Morning would have some new Tim Holtz and Sizzix things put out today. Coincided nicely with the cruddy morning happenings lol.

In this picture we have a nice paper pack by DIY Shop. There is some great paper in there like rulers, wood-grain, ledger pages etc. I think these will look really cute in a mini album. (I’ve been watching a lot of Mini Album instruction videos the past couple days. Love those!) These usually go for $20 at places like Hobby Lobby etc. and even when they are on sale 50% off they still cost more than the $7.00 I spent. haha. I found another packet of the mixed media papers, they had them at 10% off so I got it for $3.19. Next is some cute recipe cards I can use for journaling spots marked down from $8.00 and on sale for a final price of .59 cents. Some cute 7 Gypsies map chipboard alphabet for $2.00, packet of 25 sheets of paper for $1.99 (I laugh every time I buy these since I know even buying a SINGLE sheet from one of the other stores ON SALE would still cost me 25 cents, and I got 25! lol). Last but not least is what I was promised to find by the add is a lovely packet of Tim Holtz embossing folders. One is a bingo card and the other is random things and is called Patchwork. These go for $10.99 and I got them for $4.99. They had several other ones and also the die cuts but I didn’t see any that insisted I take them home. One thing not in the picture was a three pack travel style washi tape on sale for .39 cents.

IMG_4335

This next picture is the goodies I was not expecting to find but made me all giddy. The center section and the bulk of the pile are products from Inkssentials by Ranger. Top left of that area are two of each color of foil tape. (silver, gold, copper) These lovely tapes go on the sides of the frosted glass slides you see directly below them. The tapes I got for $1.99 each and the slides were only .99 cents. (regularly $5.50 and $6.00). Next to those on the right are Memory Frames. These allow you to make cute little charms, ornaments, or even necklace by adding memorabilia filled slides inside the pre-made frames. Two different sizes were $1.99 each. On the far left side are some pink slide frames. That is actually a three pack of items. The frame is the top, under that was a packet of star shaped eyelets in Christmas colors and the bottom packet was plastic circle charm things with Spring sayings on them. These were marked down and on sale for a final price of .39 cents each. WOW huh lol. Far right side is our final items. These are the T shaped pins used for sewing but I thought they might be handy in crafting since they were pre-colored blue and green. They were bundled three to a tag for only .99 cents.

IMG_4337

Ok now on to the UFP’s. I found these cards half done in my stash, left side, ignore the card on the right since I haven’t decided yet on that one. I was still trying to decide what to do with the little blue rectangles I had added the thank you stickers to. Did some digging around in my papers and found one that worked perfect.

IMG_4315

So here are the finished cards, I made 14 of them. Something new for me, I wrote down what I used to make the cards. A friend of mine does this on her blog and I figure its a nice way to let people know in case they want to try and rush out to find something to buy lol. So the “perfect paper” I found was the paisley called Cowboy Paisley by Chatterbox Inc. (found this awesome paper in an entire 25 sheet pack from Tuesday Morning!) I put that on some random card-stock in my stash, its kind of a dark green although you cannot tell very well in the picture. It was one of the colors in the paisley paper. I also cut some pieces of textured card-stock (also random brand and color in the paisley) in a burnt orange color. I distressed all the edges with Tim Holtz inks in Tea Dye color. I used a decorative corner punch on the blue “thank you” part to make it prettier. After adding all the paper parts to the card I added a double layer of mulberry paper flowers by Prima with a Recollections Faux pearl sticker to the center.

IMG_4317

Turned out pretty cute and I’m glad to have marked a UFP off my list!

Hope everyone has a great crafting week!

Pumpkins and Cricut

Hello again!
Now that it is October and the weather has become cooler, and a bit rainy, I have been thinking of some Halloween decorations that might be fun to have out. I have two plain plastic pumpkins I would put out on the entry area. I felt these needed some “sprucing up” so I pulled an idea I saved off Pinterest and went to work.

Here they are. All I used was some dimensional fabric paint I’ve had in my stash for years. You could go all sorts of crafty and do many kinds of patterns, I just did a simple swirl.

IMG_4310

Those of you who own a Cricut probably already know about the Cricut Craft room. For those not familiar, it is a program you add to your computer allowing you to use all the Cricut cartridges you own through your computer to set up how you want your Cricut to cut. Makes things a ton easier. Along with that, the company adds cartridges you don’t own on your list of available to use for a limited time so you can cut out fun things without any cost whatsoever. Well this past week they had a couple Halloween ones. Only thing that caught my eye was a web and a candelabra. I only cut out two 12 x 12 sheets worth of them to save for a project and for future use. I used a dark shiny grey paper that is solid black on the reverse. On the candles I decorated the flame using Stickles Orange peel color and the web is done in Liquid Pearls White Opal. Just adds a little something to make it look extra cute. Not sure if I will add anything to the larger web just yet.

IMG_4313

As I have been going through my things finding projects almost done, half done or just started I have been keeping them out so I can finish them up as intended. Hooray for rainy weather! haha.

Hope you have a great week!
