Journaling by 5’s

In today’s rewind to videos we are going to talk about Journaling by 5’s. Shannon Green, one of the people whose videos I watch on YouTube, came up with this genius time exercise for freeing yourself up to get creative and have fun. You can learn about it here on her video or by joining her Facebook group. (those links are provided in the video descriptions over on YouTube). The following 5 links will take you through my results from doing the steps in my first Journaling by 5 book.

Step one Background: paint/inks

Step two Texture: collage/recycled bits

Step three Patterns: stamps and stencil

Step four Focal Point: words and images

Step five Details: pen/pencil

After all those steps you then get your Free play which is where you take what you have made and add to it any additional things you think is needed. This can be doodles, more paint, more stamping etc. Whatever you desire. I still need to film the video showing how mine look now.

Hope you take up Shannon’s challenge and try this out for yourself. I am currently working on my second book.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and weekend

DLP Week 8

Week eight??? wait a minute… Yes week eight lol. Week six I am still trying to sort out and week seven I haven’t felt inspired to do yet so I have left a space for it and have gone on to week eight. My journal I can do it in whatever order I like right. 🙂

The theme for the week is repeating elements. So I decided I wanted to use circles and the color blue. I of course put down a layer of gesso to start off. Then I came in with my largest circle stencil and my darkest blue, Paynes grey.

IMG_6959

To give a few of those circles some added interest I covered them with Aleene’s Paper Glaze. This is sort of like glossy accents but not dimensional.

IMG_6961

Next I chose a couple more lighter shades of blue and two more stencils that I cut myself and added this dotted “stripes” and random clusters. I made sure to have them overlap each other here and there.

IMG_6960

Now while I am working on this I am watching the rare snow occurrence here in Louisiana. It put everyone out of school for three days haha. Back in Wyoming this would have been no big deal. Here however they do not have the equipment to handle this type of thing so its just safer if everyone stays home. It was pretty to watch but I’m glad I did not shovel it or go play in it. brrr

IMG_6963

Next I added more circles using the center of a used up tape spool and also my finger. The rings were thicker paint and they added a nice bit of dimension to the page. I think using the metallic paint also adds some nice interest.

IMG_6969

IMG_6968

To finish it off I dabbed some tiny dots through my smallest stencil, some dots with a q tip in groups of three and also used some liquid pearls in groups of three and four. At this point I thought I was done.

IMG_6971

As I was working on my Inspiration Wednesday page and was using my new script stencil I decided to use the extra molding paste on this page too.

IMG_6976

Now I can call it done.

Documented life week 5

Week five was Under papers and what lies beneath. I don’t put papers on my work surface due to the lack of space at the moment but I do use them behind my pages when working in a book. I did have in my stash of things a paper I had used to try out some foam stamps I had made. It also had some sprays tested on it.

First of all I created this ombre type background using black and grey acrylic paint and some white gesso. I got this idea from my lovely daughter. I chose these colors to offset the colorful nature of the papers I was going to layer on top.

IMG_6809

I tore the papers lengthwise and rearranged them on the page so that they were not next to what they previously had been before. I used soft matte gel in a precision tip Fineline applicator bottle to glue them down. I did not make sure they were down at every little spot.

IMG_6810

I knew I needed something else to go on the page so I rummaged in my stash and found my word stickers. This is the “Just Because” set from Cosmo Cricket. I picked out some that went with what I was feeling for the theme of the week and where the page was going. If you click on this picture below you can get the full sized version where you can zoom in and read all of the stickers used.

IMG_6811

Here is a close-up of a couple of the stickers used. I coated the top and just over the edge with some more of the soft gel, just to make sure they stuck down and to add a bit of gloss to the matte look of the page. You can also see some of the colors that were on the paper I tore up.

Hope you like this weeks page. The next one is really yummy! Stayed tuned.

Documented Life 2015 Week 4

This weeks idea and prompt was writing and words with friends. I immediately thought of the game on my phone I play with some of my friends so I dug out some scrap book paper I have been hoarding, ripped it up and glued it down to the page. I added some gesso over it to push it to the background and then I wrote some stuff down about friends. Next I added a bit of modeling paste through a stencil. I went over that and the rest of the page with some acrylic paint and more gesso to push the writing into the background.

IMG_6800

I was inspired by my 2nd week of Inspiration Wednesday (plus I still had some of the same bits still on my desk haha) to do a bit of collage. In this page below I used matte gel medium to really stick the pieces down. I wanted to do something a little different with the dlp page.

IMG_6798

So I decided I would only glue it down here and there so that the texture of the crinkled bits and pieces would stick out. I also found a sticker in my stash that had a friend quote on it that went with my bit of journaling. I used distress ink on the edges to make it match with the colors on the page. The quote says “Cling to Worthy Friends ~ Confucius” After that I used some bronze and white paint to make some splats.

IMG_6803

Here is a close-up of some of the bits of paper I used and you can see a couple of the splats I created.

Here is a nice view of the texture created through the stencil. You can also make out the scrabble tile paper in the background.

Steampunk Altered Book

Several months ago I picked up a couple of encyclopedias from a consignment thrift store that was closing down. A couple of weeks ago I was watching a video by Kim Reed on YouTube and I was struck with inspiration on what to do with one of my books.  Here is a video I did a few days ago explaining my Graphic 45 paper haul and the details of the paper and their use in the book.

Yesterday I started work on the cover. Boy it was hard work using that Xacto knife

step 1

Here is where I am today. I progressed much faster when I remembered I have a Dremel tool and can drill out all that stuff a lot easier lol. I have placed a piece of light-weight chipboard behind the page and poked holes to put the brads through to trial-fit the gears. Two of the gears have a larger center hole and cause the gear to flop out of position. I need to figure out a way to stop that so the gears will maintain their alignment so they can spin the next one in line.

step2

Hope this inspires you to create something steampunk. Keep checking back for my progression on this book.

End of September

Well it is now the end of September and I haven’t posted anything in a while oops lol. Month sure went by fast! I’ve been doing a bit of this and that but not really taking pictures of it. I have started working on making some different journal covers similar to Midori covers. I got the idea from a couple of different places and then added in a few things of my own. I’ll share that when I get to the picture taking stage. All I have done so far is cut up the faux leather and heat n bond. Along with that I made one for myself from real leather.

IMG_6160

I got both pieces of Leather from Michael’s. They had one that was just the size I wanted so I didn’t have to do much work to it. I added the holes for the elastic string to fit through and I sewed the decorative leather strip to the cover so I would know which side was the front. It also hid the holes caused by the staples used to attach it to its bar-code hang tag. I have three signatures inside. One is a normal notebook style, one is graph paper I cut to fit and the last one is plain white paper. I have been getting into the habit of chucking it into my purse when I go out so that I have it handy for notes or doodles when the time arises. Oh and I bought a bigger purse lol. My old one was feeling a little cramped with the “normal” things I put in it and I could not fit any kind of planner or journal into it so I had to upgrade. Found it at Marshall’s for a great bargain.

Tuesday Morning is still my favorite place to visit with all its fun crafting goodness. My most recent trip I scored some 12 x 12 sheets of washi tape. These are great because you can cut them up into any shape you want. I’ve been using a couple of my punches to have a selection to grab from when the need arises.

IMG_6161

I did one 12 inch strip for each shape and this is what I ended up with. I have one more pattern to do. I still have a large portion of the original paper left over. I did a 1″ square, two styles of heart, and a circle. I have one more punch I might try out, it is a flower.

I have been doing a bunch of Geocaching since the weather has cooled down some. It is a fun activity. Go to http://www.geocaching.com to check it out. My husband and I have found 37 this month. That is pretty good for us.

Off I go to work on some more washi punching. Hope you are having a great week!

Week 14 of 48 Weeks

I sort of took a break from doing the 48 weeks along the timeline of the actual weeks. That puts me behind where I “should” be. I say that because it really is a “work at your own pace” and it does not really matter when you do what week or even what order you choose to do them in. That being said here is Donna’s week 14:

week14

And here is mine. We were to gather up paper ephemera we may have in our stash. I chose bits and pieces from the swaps I participated in for the first two semesters. It was fun to dig through the bits and pick what I thought would look good together.

IMG_5773

Here are a few close-ups of the pieces I included. I love how some of the papers were translucent enough to see parts of the papers under them.

On to the next set of pages for me. Hope you are having an amazing 4th of July. Have a great time watching the fireworks (if you are US based) and be safe!
