Refurbishing a Christmas Decoration Using DecoArt Snow-Tex

With our many Military moves and digging decorations out of the boxes each year, I was bound to have some decorations become a bit roughed up. Thankfully this decoration didn’t need too much work. The house had become detached from the base and the base was squished a little and needed some extra support. I added a piece of cardboard to stiffen things up. I thought it was a great item to use some of the DecoArt snow-tex to give it a new look and hide that bit of ugly cardboard.

I used a pallet knife to spread the Snow-tex onto the surface. This worked really well and allowed me to get it into the groove at the base of the house.

Once that was dry I needed to cover the edges with something. I used a pallet knife again to apply Liquitex flexible molding paste to the edge.

I also dabbed the pallet knife on the snowman hat and along the edges of the buttons on the house to give it a more “snowed-on” look. And there it is all fresh dry and ready to put back out on display. I think it turned out great.

Here are links to the products I used if you are interested in purchasing online. Both of these products can be found in stores such as Hobby Lobby and Michael’s

Managed to squeeze in some art.

Along with sorting and cleaning to get ready to move I did finally manage to squeeze in a little time to work on a couple of pages in my Inspiration Wednesday journal. I also have a third page in progress.

In the spirit of a new home and place to explore I came up with “Begin Anew” as my words for this page. Here you can see the left half of my inclusion. I had to tape it in because I dont have inclusions since I am using a Moleskine sketchbook

Here is the right side

IMG_7286

The circular areas come from cutting circles from some textured wallpaper I received in a swap. I arranged them in a way I liked and adhered them down in the same manner that Donna did in her video. Yummy texture on this one.

IMG_7280

This next one encouraged us to use up some paper we have been hoarding. Again no inclusions and I didn’t want to tape another one in so I came up with the little booklet on the right page. Donna had done some glazing in her video and I didn’t feel like doing that so I just used distress ink and some gold coloring on my molding paste on the left side. I might come back in with a gold pen and do some journaling around the curved line.

IMG_7294

Really hard to capture how the gold and the distress ink look like a patina on these lines

IMG_7299

Gotta have a brown hole, what better place to add some of that yummy gold coloring. My two little dictionary pages were chosen based on the words they have. Home and Peace, which is what I will have in about 60 days 🙂

DLP Week 8

Week eight??? wait a minute… Yes week eight lol. Week six I am still trying to sort out and week seven I haven’t felt inspired to do yet so I have left a space for it and have gone on to week eight. My journal I can do it in whatever order I like right. 🙂

The theme for the week is repeating elements. So I decided I wanted to use circles and the color blue. I of course put down a layer of gesso to start off. Then I came in with my largest circle stencil and my darkest blue, Paynes grey.

IMG_6959

To give a few of those circles some added interest I covered them with Aleene’s Paper Glaze. This is sort of like glossy accents but not dimensional.

IMG_6961

Next I chose a couple more lighter shades of blue and two more stencils that I cut myself and added this dotted “stripes” and random clusters. I made sure to have them overlap each other here and there.

IMG_6960

Now while I am working on this I am watching the rare snow occurrence here in Louisiana. It put everyone out of school for three days haha. Back in Wyoming this would have been no big deal. Here however they do not have the equipment to handle this type of thing so its just safer if everyone stays home. It was pretty to watch but I’m glad I did not shovel it or go play in it. brrr

IMG_6963

Next I added more circles using the center of a used up tape spool and also my finger. The rings were thicker paint and they added a nice bit of dimension to the page. I think using the metallic paint also adds some nice interest.

IMG_6969

IMG_6968

To finish it off I dabbed some tiny dots through my smallest stencil, some dots with a q tip in groups of three and also used some liquid pearls in groups of three and four. At this point I thought I was done.

IMG_6971

As I was working on my Inspiration Wednesday page and was using my new script stencil I decided to use the extra molding paste on this page too.

IMG_6976

Now I can call it done.

Documented Life 2015 Week 4

This weeks idea and prompt was writing and words with friends. I immediately thought of the game on my phone I play with some of my friends so I dug out some scrap book paper I have been hoarding, ripped it up and glued it down to the page. I added some gesso over it to push it to the background and then I wrote some stuff down about friends. Next I added a bit of modeling paste through a stencil. I went over that and the rest of the page with some acrylic paint and more gesso to push the writing into the background.

IMG_6800

I was inspired by my 2nd week of Inspiration Wednesday (plus I still had some of the same bits still on my desk haha) to do a bit of collage. In this page below I used matte gel medium to really stick the pieces down. I wanted to do something a little different with the dlp page.

IMG_6798

So I decided I would only glue it down here and there so that the texture of the crinkled bits and pieces would stick out. I also found a sticker in my stash that had a friend quote on it that went with my bit of journaling. I used distress ink on the edges to make it match with the colors on the page. The quote says “Cling to Worthy Friends ~ Confucius” After that I used some bronze and white paint to make some splats.

IMG_6803

Here is a close-up of some of the bits of paper I used and you can see a couple of the splats I created.

IMG_6806

Here is a nice view of the texture created through the stencil. You can also make out the scrabble tile paper in the background.

New Page in my Moleskine

I was feeling a bit inspired after creating my newest batch of ATC’s. I cannot show those yet as I have to put them in the mail today and I don’t want to spoil the surprise for the people getting them. They inspired me to create a new journal page.

To start the page I put down a piece of masking tape in the center. This stops color from seeping through to other pages. Next I covered the pages with gesso. I created the background using Faber Castell Gelatos. I rubbed them around the page using a baby wipe. Once I got the colors how I liked I used a cloud stencil and rubbed the page clean of color through it. A really neat way to make clouds. I got out some molding paste and dabbed it here and there in the water to create the appearance of some small waves coming to shore. The added texture is really fun. The seashells are cut from a napkin then attached to some cream card-stock using gel medium. I then fussy cut them and added a little shading using my new Derwent Inktense pencils. The final step was to put some Aleen’s Paper Glaze over them. I got this far on it and felt a little stumped on what to add to it. I posted the picture to the KIF Facebook group for some creative suggestions.

IMG_5906

After reading the suggestions I dug through my sticker stash and found some things that would go perfect on the page. I added a beach chair, sand castle and two birds, along with some shading here and there. I like how well they go with the page and aren’t weird looking because of being stickers. The stickers are from Creative Memories and I have had them for at least ten years. I also found some summer/beach quotes in my stash. This one seemed to fit perfect with the layout. I used some Liquid Pearl around the edge. If you click on the image you can really zoom in to read the quote and see the details.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and a great start to the week.

ATC Swap and a Page

I’m in the Lifebook class and was able to sign up for a couple ATC swaps. The first one was daily ritual. I don’t do anything meditative or ritualistic in the sense that some others may do but I do have a cup of coffee every morning, love checking the mail, feeding the squirrels and birds, and watering the plants. So I incorporated some bits to my ATC’s to represent those activities.

Here you see my completed cards. I made a set for my swap partner and a set for myself. The criteria was to make two cards for our one partner. The background was made with craft paints and using a natural sponge to dab it on. I also used some Graphic45 stamps.

IMG_5815

Here is a closeup of my little coffee cup. I cut it from brown paper and used pencils to color it. The coffee is LuminArte Silks glaze. The steam is Liquid Pearls. The little plant is highlighted on the flowers with Stickles.

IMG_5816

This next picture shows the tiny vellumn envelope that I put a heart, plant leaf, and water droplet confetti inside. The piece of “air mail” is a sticker.

IMG_5817

Here is the little wood veneer bird by Studio Calico that I added. I colored it then added some Liquid Glass over it.

IMG_5818

The next set of ATC’s I only made a set for my swap partner and not one for myself. This theme was bugs and insects. For the left side card I took some patterned scrapbook paper and added it to the ATC card. I then used some watered down gesso to mask out a single shape for a flower. I used Liquid Pearls to decorate the flower and give it a stem. Across the top I added some lacy cut paper tape. On the flower and the tap I included a ladybug sticker. They were both covered in Liquid glass with a tiny bit of glitter. along the bottom of the card is a piece of rub on. The right side card I cut a piece of scrapbook paper that looked a bit like honeycombs. I added a line of black liquid glass to divide the card and added watered down gesso to mask out the background. I also used some Liquid Pearls and Liquid glass on some of the individual chambers. The bees are stickers and I added liquid glass to their wings. The Bzz Bzz is using a Studio G stamp set (the dollar bin ones).

IMG_5830

Yesterday I felt inspired to do a page in my spiral bound art journal. I used gelatos to create the background colors. I then used some modeling paste through a checkerboard stencil. I also sprayed some color through it. I used Stazon ink trough a swirling stencil to add a pop of black. I took some of the deli paper flowers I showed a couple posts back and attached them to the page with matte gel medium. I also cut apart some die-cut shapes (the circles) which I colored using distress ink in Dusty concord. After everything was dry I high-lighed the flowers and shapes using my Faber Castell big brush pitt pens

IMG_5883.

I had a lot of fun making these projects. It felt good to get another page done in my art journal too. My Mojo seemed to have run off in regards to that aspect of my creativity and was only centering on making recycled materials books. I even got part of my week 15 page for 48 weeks done. Today it’s on to continuing it and hopefully get that posted in a couple days.

Hope everyone is having an art/craft filled week.

Week 4 “Canvas to Our Imagination”

This one was a little intimidating for me as I don’t like to draw people. I actually erased what I had twice before doing what is there now. I think that also explains the scale of the figure, since it feels like it needed to be bigger.

Here is Donna’s page:

week4

Here is mine. The quote says “This world is but a canvas to our imagination” by Henry David Thoreau:

IMG_4694

First onto the page was some dress pattern tissue paper then a layer of joint compound over it. Donna used something I do not have to create some added texture in the joint compound. I substituted using a rubber stamp I have. You can just make out in the top left corner of the left page where the stamp was used. If you do this, make sure to wash your stamp out right away using an old toothbrush or similar tool so that you get all of the compound out of the grooves. I used a flower stencil and modeling paste to create the flowers.

IMG_4692

Here is a close-up of the figure. I drew it with pencil then went over it with charcoal. Next I used varnish fixative to set the charcoal. Then I went in with neocolors on her. I used some gelatos for the blue on the page.

IMG_4693

Here is a close-up of the texture of the flower and the coloring I used.

I cannot say I had as much fun with this page as I had with say the flower page from week 2 but I did get some practice in doing the human form lol.

I’m still working on the little houses I mentioned in the last post. here is a picture of them so far:

IMG_4678

I think they are really cute and will look great once I finish adding little touches here and there.

I also mentioned I was going to make some smaller versions of my pages but only on canvas. Here is the first one of those. The canvas measures six by six inches.

IMG_4695

I repeated most of the steps I used in the art journal and then added the embellishments. I plan on adding something to the flower centers but haven’t decided what exactly. I think I will also outline the petals with some color.

IMG_4696

Here is a view of one of the flowers. I used rub-ons for the lettering and words on the other one.

IMG_4697

Here is a number plate I got from CTMH, it is very similar to the ones put out by Tim Holtz.

That’s it for today. As I have said before if you want more information about the 48 Weeks class look to the right side of the page and you should find a click-able web blinky to take you there. Might have to scroll back up a little depending on the placement of the post.

Have a great week!
