Canvas Corp Brands Crew 4×4 Challenge

logo

As part of our first order of goodies we were given a 4″ x 4″ canvas to decorate in a way that represented us. I used many things in mine to represent different parts of me; this resulted in many layers, also part of me haha.

To start with I added some Liquitex Super Heavy Gesso around the edge of the canvas using a pallet knife. This is representative of the shell I have around me to protect my feelings. Not all the way around but where it counts. While that sat to dry I gathered some parts to add next.

I found this canvas M in my stash and used Tattered Angels High Impact Paint in Aqua (one of my favorite colors right now) along the edge. I didn’t want to cover the whole thing in it as I felt it would become the main focal point of the canvas rather than being part of a whole. M for my First name.

IMG_8588

I let those sit over-night and came back the next day to begin my layout. I started by adding a piece of lace I received in my first order and positioned some corrugated card over it to help secure it. Lace for my feminine side.

IMG_8591

On top of that I layered a few pieces of burlap and a bit of book text from my stash. Book text because I love reading and old book text in general (Ephemera). Burlap because it is scratchy and I can be hard to be around at times.

IMG_8592

Then I got so involved in adding all my parts I forgot to take some pictures along the way so here you see a cup that was fussy cut from Canvas Corp “Fill the Cup” on Kraft. A spoon from Beans and Bags “Black and Ivory Spoon” these represent my enjoyment of coffee with things added such as creamer and sugar. A little metal bird from my stash that I am not sure where it came from represents my love of birds and nature in general. The 42 bingo marker was also part of my stash and has a double meaning. I turn 42 this year (March) and also Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (I love sci-fi/fantasy). In that book, 42 is The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. On the left side of the canvas is a clothes clip representing “holding it all together” and a bundle of 7Gypsy seam binding from Notting Hill in one of my favorite colors, blue. This is for Lady Blue Studios, my creative name, Blue Crafty (this blog) and a number of other blue related things for me (mood, Air Force Family). There is 4 parts hanging down in reference to my four family members (husband, two kids and myself). The quote comes from Canvas Corp Artsy Sampler on Kraft and perfectly explains my untidy art room and mind at times lol.

IMG_8593

Here is the finished canvas. After looking at it again I decided I needed a bit of washi tape on there because I LOVE washi tape lol. I used a piece from 7Gypsy Global collection and chose the one that looked like ledger paper. I love ledger paper. Then right above the 42 you will see a little symbol. That is called a geotag. I added that little bit on because I love Geocaching and this was the closest I could find to represent it and the little icons in the geocaching app do resemble a geotag. I covered it with Irresistible Pico Embellisher in Paris Dusk. I also went around the edge of the canvas with Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Vintage Photo just to tie all the colors together.

Here is a close-up of the geotag

And here you can see the detail in the spoon handle as it pokes through the cup handle.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my project and the steps involved in making it as well as the meaning behind many of the pieces. Next time you are looking at a piece of art remember that a lot more can go into it that just slapping some paint down or gluing a few items on. Heart goes into it too. I could have added many more bits to represent myself but then my canvas would have been as cluttered as my work-surface lol.

Looking forward to sharing many more projects I create through the year with Canvas Corp Brands and I hope you stick with me. Don’t forget I also do videos on YouTube that you can watch each week.

Journaling by 5’s

In today’s rewind to videos we are going to talk about Journaling by 5’s. Shannon Green, one of the people whose videos I watch on YouTube, came up with this genius time exercise for freeing yourself up to get creative and have fun. You can learn about it here on her video or by joining her Facebook group. (those links are provided in the video descriptions over on YouTube). The following 5 links will take you through my results from doing the steps in my first Journaling by 5 book.

Step one Background: paint/inks

Step two Texture: collage/recycled bits

Step three Patterns: stamps and stencil

Step four Focal Point: words and images

Step five Details: pen/pencil

After all those steps you then get your Free play which is where you take what you have made and add to it any additional things you think is needed. This can be doodles, more paint, more stamping etc. Whatever you desire. I still need to film the video showing how mine look now.

Hope you take up Shannon’s challenge and try this out for yourself. I am currently working on my second book.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and weekend

New space

So here I am at my new house and in my new space. Here is a look at what it currently looks like.

new

I have everything out of the boxes and I am in the process of putting things away. The furniture you see in the room is in it’s final place.

Along with my room I have also been unpacking the entire house so it doesn’t leave me tons of time to do a lot of things but I have managed a couple of projects which you can hear about here:

Once I get more settled I will begin doing more projects and videos and showcasing my DecoArt products I received.

Stay tuned!

Three Inspiration Wednesday Pages

As you already know I have been getting ready to move. I have been doing my IW2015 pages and keeping up with them as a release from all the stress involved with having to have 13000+ pounds of belongings packed up by strangers. I really hate having them mess with my things but it has to be done as I am not capable of packing and moving all of that on my own lol.

So on to the pages. I mentioned I was already working on one in my last post and this is what I came up with.

I carried the gold I used on the last page over to this one. Donna used a word spread over her pages so I chose to use the one I picked as my word for the year. I mentioned this in my post back in January when I started DLP2015. My word is completion. I really love how the colors look like some old patina.

IMG_7300

Here you can see how the letters are on the page. As always, if you click on any of my pictures you can go to the full sized image where you can really zoom in and see the details.

IMG_7302

I really love how the gold caught on the texture and letters.

IMG_7304

The next one I completed was pretty fun. It has a bit of a soft grungy look to it. Donna used sprays on her page for her black portion, I went with Acrylic paint.

IMG_7466

I used a rub-on here

IMG_7468

Here you can see some of the book text I added to the page.

IMG_7469

Lastly my third page. I think this is one of my favorites so far. The background is bits of papers from my scraps. One of them had the word Lucky on it and was part of some mail I got from an order.

IMG_7477

Got some great drippage going here. Look at how fun the drywall tape backing is.

IMG_7478

Used a Pico Embellisher for these circles and added shadow with my inktense pencils. They really pop from the page and add a nice bit of extra dimension.

IMG_7479

Hope you enjoyed seeing my pages and thanks for stopping by. Apparently this is my 100th post on the blog so woo me party!!! Just kidding haha.

Documented life week 5

Week five was Under papers and what lies beneath. I don’t put papers on my work surface due to the lack of space at the moment but I do use them behind my pages when working in a book. I did have in my stash of things a paper I had used to try out some foam stamps I had made. It also had some sprays tested on it.

First of all I created this ombre type background using black and grey acrylic paint and some white gesso. I got this idea from my lovely daughter. I chose these colors to offset the colorful nature of the papers I was going to layer on top.

IMG_6809

I tore the papers lengthwise and rearranged them on the page so that they were not next to what they previously had been before. I used soft matte gel in a precision tip Fineline applicator bottle to glue them down. I did not make sure they were down at every little spot.

IMG_6810

I knew I needed something else to go on the page so I rummaged in my stash and found my word stickers. This is the “Just Because” set from Cosmo Cricket. I picked out some that went with what I was feeling for the theme of the week and where the page was going. If you click on this picture below you can get the full sized version where you can zoom in and read all of the stickers used.

IMG_6811

Here is a close-up of a couple of the stickers used. I coated the top and just over the edge with some more of the soft gel, just to make sure they stuck down and to add a bit of gloss to the matte look of the page. You can also see some of the colors that were on the paper I tore up.

Hope you like this weeks page. The next one is really yummy! Stayed tuned.

Painted Clothes Pins and Recycled Paper Books

Wow it has been a couple of weeks since I last posted. Amazing how time flies when you least expect it. Today I am sharing a couple of things I have worked on and a shout-out to myself 😉

First up the recycled paper books.
When we moved here in August we had tons of paper from all the breakables and the huge multi-layered sheets they used to wrap up plastic totes. While in the process of clearing out some of those paper sheets in the attic a few months ago, I noticed that one of the layers had some cool texture. So I peeled it out and set it aside. One sheet of this paper was big enough to cover the top of my queen sized bed. A couple of weeks ago I finally used that big paper to make pages for my books. Here you can see the two types of paper I found and saved. Such fun texture!

IMG_5640

I took cardboard food boxes I had saved and measured them to see what size pages would fit in them. Then I proceeded to cut/tear from the large sheets what I needed for each book. After that I set up signatures and test fit them to the covers as seen in this next picture. I was able to make three signatures for each book of 8-10 pages a piece. One book has four signatures. In addition they provide space to add in chunky items or extra signatures.

IMG_5642

I learned a tip somewhere (cannot remember who, might have been Kathy Orta) of using tyvek envelopes as reinforcement for binding signatures. It stops your thread from ripping through the cardboard. This next picture shows the strip of tyvek attached to the cover and lines drawn for where the signatures will be placed. I have pierced holes using an awl type tool and sewn in the first signature using waxed thread. The tyvek was attached using double sided tape.

IMG_5644

Here are all of the books showing the binding and thread. This will be covered up as I decided what to decorate the covers with.

IMG_5651

All the rough bits of edge look awesome. It was fun to use products that would have gone in the recycle bin. I now have six new books I can do art in or add things into like a Smash book. I also have a video on my YouTube channel where I talk about them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT-CxESXo8E

IMG_5652

Next up is my painted clothes pegs. While shopping here and there I kept noticing decorated clothes pins. Some were painted, others had glitter or words on them. My frugal mind said “don’t buy those, you can make them yourself for cheaper”. So I did.

Here they are completed. I painted them then added rub-ons for the numbers. I will be posting a video on my YouTube channel of my process for these once I get it edited. I am going to make more in assorted sizes.
